Congressman Dunn working to expand access to cancer treatment
Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Congressman Neal Dunn, M.D. (FL-02) and Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) introduced the Facilitating Access to Innovation in Cancer Care Act (FAIC Act) on Friday.
According to a spokesperson for Neal Dunn the FAIC Act aims to guarantee that Medicare cancer patients have access to the most effective available treatments.
Flaws in Medicare’s current payment structure have prevented many innovative therapies that improve patient outcomes from reaching patients, according to a press release from Congressman Dunn’s office.
Dunn’s office says expensive cancer medications can be harder for hospitals to provide because Medicare tends to pay a lump sum that may not fully cover expensive cancer drugs.
The FAIC Act would require Medicare to pay separately and appropriately for those drugs under Part B.
Congressman Dunn’s office says the legislation would not increase Medicare’s outpatient payment spending. Instead, it would shift how payments were allocated.
