The suspect of a shooting in Gulf County Monday is dead after shooting himself in the head during a confrontation with law enforcement.

The Gulf County Sheriff's Office says the U.S. Marshals Task Force and local deputies observed Stephen Michael Smith, 34, in a vehicle traveling west on U.S. Highway 98 in Gulf County late Tuesday evening. Smith was wanted in connection to a shooting that took place Monday morning.

Officers stopped the vehicle at the intersection of Ivy Road and U.S. Highway 98 in Parker to apprehend Smith. With the vehicle surrounded by law enforcement, Smith then placed a pistol to his head and committed suicide.

The scene was secured and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the incident.

"This was a little bit of closure especially for the Upton family. We're focusing right now on the other suspect(Terry Henry) in this the person who facilitated the meeting between the two," said said Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison.

44-year-old Destiny Terry is already in custody at the Gulf County Detention Facility. Terry is being charged with principal to second degree murder.
