"A long time ago it [Black's Island] was inhabited by the Indians and then in 1715 it was actually inhabited by a pirate, Black Sam Bellamy," Black's Island Shuttle Captain Lee DiPolo said.

According to DiPolo, stories of pirate treasure and ghost ships from Captain Black's time fill the islands history.

"When he was inhabiting the island, he actually left in about 1717, he was headed up to Massachusetts. At that time he was commodore of three vessels, they were taking them to New England and they encountered a bad storm and they were all lost at sea and only one of the ships has been found and he was a very successful pirate so he definitely had a lot of loot, it could be around in these shifting sands," she said.

Fast forward hundreds of years and a resort now sits on the eight-acre island featuring 26 bungalows, a pool, several docks, and other amenities, but the structure didn't become a vacation destination overnight.

The owner of the property Scott Seymour says it actually sat vacant for years.

"The island was developed back in 2007, 2008, and 2009. They finished it in 2009, that was the height of the recession, so not a lot of marketability there. It sat and fortunately enough we were able to put a deal together in 2018," Seymour said.

The island is now open for wedding events, and overnight rentals, as Seymour continues to make some improvements.

"We're putting new docks in, new boardwalks, all the units are being renovated, we have jet-ski's and kayaks and all types of stuff out here for recreation," Seymour said.

Renovations are set to be completed by the spring. As for Captain Black, legend has it he sailed away to return to his lover and his child and was never seen again.
