‘Her’-ricane Summer Camp inspires career empowerment for young girls
WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A week of empowerment for dozens of young girls!
Walton County Emergency Management hosted a Herricane Girls’ Summer Camp at the South Walton Fire District. The camp brings in guest speakers to highlight career fields typically dominated by men.
The camp aims to show young girls they can succeed in these careers as well.
NewsChannel 7’s Jessica Foster spoke with the girls about the world of broadcasting, teaching them about journalism.
The girls say the camp has given them confidence.
“It does make you feel a little more powerful because most of these jobs that these ladies have come to talk to us about have been mainly male-dominated fields and they like stand out and do their own thing in these fields,” said eighth grader Lindsey Johnson.
“It’s mostly just girls and women, so it’s nice to not have a bunch of boys around,” said sixth grader, Cameron Buck.
The camp is held yearly for middle and high school girls.
