PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Tyndall Air Force Base unveiled a part of their story of resilience on Friday.

In the wake of Hurricane Michael, Tyndall AFB took on the challenge of building back the base better and stronger than before. On Friday airmen celebrated the official opening of two community commons buildings and a new lodge that reflect the walkability of a campus.

The new facilities fit the Miami-Dade standard, meaning they can withstand hurricane winds up to 165 miles-per-hour, said Ryan Thulin, Commander of the 325th Fighter Wing.

The new facilities are both building morale among airmen and drawing people to the area, Thulin told NewsChannel7.

“It’s a huge attractor for people and families to come here and be embedded in the local schools on top of that the mission we do in Projecting Combat Power for America here at Tyndall Air Force Base is also very attractive for the military members if they want to come be a part of Projecting Combat Power for America this is the center point of it here,” Thulin said.

The new facilities aim to provide support for airmen and foster community among families, Thulin added.
