Buddy Walk draws community for inclusion event
17th annual event hosted by Down Syndrome Association of the Emerald Coast
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - People gathered Saturday for the 17th annual Buddy Walk, hosted by the Down Syndrome Association of the Emerald Coast.
The event invites people with Down syndrome, their families and friends, and the community to walk together.
Families share what the day means
Daniel and Carolyn Modawell said the event holds special meaning for their family.
“It’s always a special event. He pretty much prays for it every single day until it comes around. We just love it,” Carolyn said.
Lauren Kolmetz, treasurer for the Down Syndrome Association Board, said the event featured vendors, games, inflatables and food.
“We have vendors, games, inflatables, food — the sheriff’s office is out, and the fire truck is out,” Kolmetz said.
Community turnout at Tommy Oliver Stadium
The event was held at Tommy Oliver Stadium.
Cooper and Brandon Kolmetz said they enjoyed seeing the community come together.
“Such a great time seeing all the community come out here and celebrate these guys,” they said.
Hashim Tareen, a volunteer at the event, described the atmosphere.
“So fun and everyone’s so happy and so supportive,” Tareen said.
Kolmetz said participants receive medals during the walk, and the event featured an ambassador this year.
“Including and celebrating those with Down syndrome. They get medals when we walk. There’s an ambassador this year for the walk and it’s great to feel included and feel appreciated,” Kolmetz said.
Raffle proceeds support future events
The Buddy Walk also included a raffle. Proceeds go to the Down Syndrome Association of the Emerald Coast.
“We use that money to pour back into our community with other events,” Kolmetz said.
Those events include a Christmas dinner for families, a party for World Down Syndrome Day, and family outings.
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
