Patriotism in practice: New U.S. flag drop box unveiled in Panama City

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Fourth of July weekend may be over, but there is still plenty of patriotism in the air in Panama City.

Monday, University of West Florida rising sophomore Kaial Hajik unveiled a U.S. flag disposal box at Panama City City Hall.

“I am an Eagle Scout, and I have been doing this since 2014, so yeah, way too long ago,” said Hajik.

Hajik’s passion for respecting the flag stems from having witnessed it being disrespected in the past.

“We were at the landfill and just came across this huge plastic container, all torn, you know, shredded of American flags,” explained Hajik. “They had been there for at least two years. We were just like ‘Okay, we have got to something for this, it is our nation’s colors. Have to give it proper transportation, to get that proper respect that it deserves.”

Well, how does the box function? It is pretty simple. Just open the bucket, insert your flag, close it, and the flag drops.

Even those who don’t live near Panama City City Hall have options.

Not only has Kaial made six other of these boxes around the area, but U.S. flag etiquette dictates that organizations like the American Legion can dispose of worn-out flags.

In fact, Legion Post 392 will be emptying the box at City Hall.

“We are excited to certainly partner with the county, with the city of Panama City on this event,” said Stephen Mihal, first vice commander of American Legion Post 392. “American Legion is three blocks from here, and to have a flag box up here to help get those flags that need retirement is a wonderful opportunity.”

The box will serve as a reminder that any flags no longer flying high deserve respect.
